| Obituary: |
Family and friends of Maurine Howard Chisholm will gather to celebrate her life of 92 years Saturday, August 29th at 11:00 a.m., at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial located at 6025 82nd Street in Lubbock, Texas. She passed away August 20, 2009 in Tacoma, Washington where she lived for the past 10 years.
Maurine was born in Ellis County, Texas on January 1, 1917, to Ben Forbes and Lucy Rogers Forbes. After her mother's death during the influenza epidemic of 1919, Ben Forbes married Roxie Moore and the family moved to Smyer, Texas. Maurine attended Smyer school during her elementary years, graduated from Lubbock High School, and attended Texas Tech.
During her eighteenth year she married Marshall Howard, and they moved to Vega, Texas, during the "Dust Bowl" years. They returned to Lubbock in 1945 and five years later settled in Littlefield, Texas, where Marshall opened a farm supply business. In 1953 Maurine began working as the Secretary for the Superintendent of Littlefield Schools. She worked there until retiring in 1980. Marshall Howard passed away in 1964, and in 1966 Maurine married J. E. Chisholm who served as mayor of Littlefield from 1965 until his death in 1979.
Maurine was a devoted Christian and was active in the First Methodist Church of Littlefield. She dearly loved her family and friends. She was always there for her sons, and she lovingly supported each of their activities and interests. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, and she enjoyed playing bridge with friends. She found great joy in serving the needs of others.
She is survived by her two sons, Dan Howard and his wife Kay of Lubbock, Texas and Dale Howard and his wife Gail of Tacoma, Washington; her grandchildren, David Howard and wife, Laura of Charlotte, NC, Beth Hittle and husband, Karl of New Braunfels, TX, Linda Watson and husband Dal of Midland, TX, Chris Howard and wife, Kylisa of Seattle, WA, and James Howard and wife Nicole of Fresno, CA; and her great grandchildren, Melanie Watson, Katie Hittle, James Howard, Kyle Hittle, Will Watson, Andrew Howard, Luke Watson, Jackson Howard, and Grayson Howard.
Maurine is also survived by J. E. Chisholm's sons, Kip Cutshall and wife Phyllis of Littlefield, Texas and Johnny Basden and wife Patricia of Odessa, Texas; her grandchildren Debi Blake and husband, Donny, David W. Cutshall, Sheri Tyler and husband, David, Heather Morgan and Johnny Basden; and her great grandchildren Brian Blake, D. J. Tyler, Doug Tyler, Lee Tyler and wife, Michelle, Scott Leo, Rebecca Basden, and Johnny Wayne Basden, III. Other survivors include Maurine's brother-in-law, Bill Howard and wife Mary of San Antonio, Texas, as well as many loving nieces, nephews and their families. Maurine was preceded in death by her parents, her only brother, Jimmie Forbes and wife Sue, and her only sister, Loraine Forbes Pollard and husband Bud.
Maurine was as beautiful in spirit as she was in person. She was a gracious, elegant and kind person who brought great joy to the lives of others. Her sense of humor was remarkable for her being able laugh at herself and to teach others to avoid taking themselves too seriously. We will miss her very much.
The family wishes to thank the many people who made her life comfortable and peaceful in her last days, and in particular Mary Lynn Cvitanovic, who always helped her with loving kindness, and who always went above and beyond in her care of Maurine.
