Rick was born December 9, 1947, in Kingsport, TN to Ross Patrick and Zula Mae (Light) Johnson. He grew up in Kingsport, Chicago and in Europe, where he graduated high school in Zug, Switzerland. Rick graduated from Texas Tech University and remained in Lubbock, TX with his wife of 33 years, Becky, where they raised their three children. He was also a father figure to many foster children and a great role model to all those who knew him.
Rick had a passion for sports his entire life. He grew up playing baseball, was a little league coach, played golf with his family and friends and watched his favorite college football teams, Tennessee and Texas Tech. Rick’s competitive nature was never more apparent than during his two year battle with cancer. He was a true champion.
Those left to cherish Rick’s memories are his wife, Becky; sons, Reagan Johnson and wife Ruth of Tucson, AZ and Josh Johnson of Dallas, TX; daughter, Keely Johnson of Lubbock, TX; parents, Ross and Zula Johnson of Kingsport, TN; sister, Susan Davis and husband Bill of Houston, TX; brother, Mike Johnson and wife Jodi of Coppell, TX; grandsons, Isaac Johnson of Tucson, AZ and Slay Johnson Bowley of Lubbock, TX; mother-in-law, Avalene Powell of Lubbock, TX; brothers-in-law, Bill Powell of Levelland, TX and John Powell and wife Lana of Houston, TX; sister-in-law Annette Powell of Lubbock, TX; and seven nephews and three nieces.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Jude’s Cancer Research Hospital or Odyssey Hospice.
