Ron was born on July 29, 1937 to L.A. Purtell and Hazel Lewis Purtell in Lubbock. He graduated from Monterey High School in 1956. Following graduation he attended Lubbock Christian College and Texas Technological College. He worked in Lubbock for West Texas Construction and Municipal Investment Corporation. He later became a substance abuse counselor and worked in Lubbock for MHMR, and for the past 20 years in the Dallas area for Timberlawn and Green Oaks Hospitals, retiring in 2002, but returned to counseling working part time for Genesis Counseling.
He is survived by two sons, Jim Purtell and wife Carolanne, Sean Purtell and wife Teresa, a daughter Katy Wallney and husband Mark; six grandchildren Sarah, Adam, Caleb, Allison, and Derek Purtell and Erin Wallney; one great granddaughter, McKinzie Purtell; and a sister Susan Stack and husband Bob, all of Lubbock.
