Most businesses, benefits, and legal matters require a certified copy of a death certificate. Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers obtain these certified copies as quickly as possible to afford you ample time to begin getting personal assets in order. To know how many death certificates you will need, you must first inventory the assets for which, there is a benefit to be paid, a legal notification is required or a legal transfer of ownership is required. Your attorney or accountant should be able to assist you in determining the correct number of certificates to order.

Check with individual companies, banks etc. to determine if they will need to keep a certified copy for their records or if they will make their own photocopy of a certified copy and return the original. Most life insurance companies require that the cause of death section be on the certified copy of the death certificate. You will need Certified Copies of the Death Certificates for items such as:

  • Probate
  • Life insurance proceeds (include travel, unions, mortgage and credit life etc.)
  • Sell or transfer stocks, bonds, CD’s
  • Sell or transfer real property
  • Sell or transfer car, boat, mobile homes, modular home titles
  • Employee benefits and pensions
  • Bank and loan transactions
  • Income Tax Records
  • Veteran monetary benefit claims
  • Transfer of remains outside of the United States.

Re-Order Certified Death Certificates
Sometimes additional death certificates are needed weeks, months, or even years following a death. If Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers directed the services you can obtain additional certified copies by giving us a call, 806-698-8085, email santos3@sbcglobal.net, otherwise, please contact Vital Statistics directly by phone or mail.

There are many ways to say farewell from formal funeral services to private home-setting celebrations. They all form a part of the way we say goodbye. Obituaries or death notices, however, are a public way we share our final farewell celebration. The story is the way we say goodbye - the public posting of final words. Some obituaries indicate much thought and much reflection on the life that was lived.
A death notice is a minimal amount or notice. An obituary is usually a more detailed account of a person's life and is often prepared for the newspaper from a form that the family fills out. Obituaries are a written form of collective remembrances. The memories remind us of others as well as ourselves - parents or grandparents of friends, the young suddenly departing, the loss of `valiant struggles' against diseases not yet conquered.
When community members leave, whether we know them personally or not, we mark their time with us by publicly commemorating their passing. The final words are one way we say goodbye and the way we will remember. These final words are often the way survivors pay tribute, perhaps make amends, and express hope for immortality.

Placing an Obituary with the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

Paid Obituaries
All obituaries will be paid notices. The charge for space is $4.50 per line (approximately 4-5 words per line); there is no limit to the number of lines for purchase. These paid obituaries can include expanded biological information, including employment, club memberships, civic involvement, professional accomplishments, pallbearers’ names, and any survivors the family wishes to list. Obituaries can be published for additional days at a rate of $3.35 per line.
A photograph of the deceased can be added to the obituary. Inclusion of a photo adds to the total lineage and therefore increases the final cost. A small, half column photo (1” by 1.5”) adds approximately $27 to the total, while a large photo (1 column by 2”) adds approximately $63.

Photographs
Photographs for paid obituaries should be delivered or emailed (in .jpg format) to the newspaper no later than 5 p.m. daily. Photos can be black and white or color, but will always be published in black and white. Photos delivered to the newspaper will be returned if correct return address information is included.

Publication
An alphabetical listing of all the day’s obituaries will be included in the page design. For funeral homes that wish to participate, obituaries will be grouped under the heading of the funeral home handling the service. The headings include the funeral home’s logo, address and phone number; funeral homes will be charged a nominal fee each time the header is used. All other obituaries will be grouped under a general heading.

Online Obituaries
Each obituary will appear on www.lubbockonline.com. The day’s listing can be viewed and past obituaries can be searched. Death notices also are posted online. There is no additional charge for this online posting.

Deadlines
Deadline for the obituary department

  • Paid Obituaries – 5 p.m. daily for the next day’s edition
  • Death Notices – 6 p.m. daily for the next day’s edition.

Note: The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal may adjust deadlines during holidays.
Funeral homes will be advised if early deadlines are in effect.

Billing
Funeral homes will receive a monthly statement for obituaries, itemized by deceased’s name. Paid obituaries placed by the family member require pre-payment.

Death Notices
A free death notice is published one time in the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. It includes the name of the deceased, age, city of residence, date of death; time, date and place of services; and name of the funeral home.

Memorials/Notices of Appreciation
The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal will publish memorials or notices at the same obit rate, $4.50 per line. Deadlines and guidelines for submission are the same.

Why do we need to celebrate the life of a loved one?
“The funeral ritual is a public, traditional, and symbolic means of expressing our beliefs, thoughts, and feelings about the death of someone loved. The funeral ceremony helps us to acknowledge the reality of death, gives testimony to the life of the person who died, encourages the expression of grief in a way consistent with the culture’s value, provides support to mourners, allows for the embracing of faith and beliefs about life and death, and offers continuity and hope for the living.” Alan D. Wolfelt, PH. D.

A cremation of simplicity provides a family requesting minimal service an opportunity to remember their loved one with dignity, while providing the survivors closure. Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers provides families, who select cremation, our exclusive ceremonial witnessing of the cremation. A ceremonial witnessing is similar to the graveside services at a cemetery when a family has selected a ground burial. The idea is to provide the survivors a meaningful time of closure. Like the burial service, the family does not usually view the process of burial, so the families who select the ceremonial witnessing usually do not witness the process of cremation. The ritual dismisses any doubt that you have received your loved ones’ cremated remains. Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers’ signature services are included. A cremation container with dignity, crematory fees, and Medical Examiners permit fees are included. Cremation merchandise such as caskets, urns, and keepsakes are available at an additional charge. A choice of three wooden urns or three sheet metal urns and a sterling silver "Thumbie" charm and necklace.
