Gary was born on January 1, 1946, to the late Eugene and Thelma (Underwood) Cain in Lubbock, TX. Following graduation from Smyer High School, Gary attended South Plains College. He graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture. Gary owned and operated Gary Cain Insurance Agency, and he raised cattle in Smyer. Gary was active in the Smyer agricultural community. He was a member of the PRCA Rodeo Cowboys Association and an Honorary Chapter Farmer of the Smyer FFA. He served on the board of directors for the Hockley County Stock Show Association and the Kansas Livestock Association Feeder Council. Gary was a founding father of the Dodge City Round Up. He also served on the Smyer ISD school board. Gary was a faithful and active member of the First Baptist Church, Smyer. He enjoyed auctioneering at many local events and was a loyal Red Raider fan. Gary is survived by his longtime companion and best friend, Iris Sager, of Smyer; two children, Tonya Rene Gafford of Midland and Brandon Eugene Cain and wife, Genelle, of Anchorage, Alaska; three step-children, Ty Sager, Andrea Barron and husband, Neal, and Matt Sager and wife, Kristen, all of Lubbock; nine grandchildren.
